Hot Out the Oven: ILO Productions

Getting to listen and witness what goes into the production of a song gives you a greater appreciation for the final product and music as a whole. I've had the pleasure of living upstairs from the genius behind ILO Productions and I can account first hand that this guy is brilliant. The creativity and work that goes into making a quality fusion of different songs and melodies is quite impressive and is easy to overlook. Mash-ups have slowly grown on me throughout the year, largely because of the wild noises and mixes I would catch coming from the first floor of my dorm. ILO has some dope albums which you can grab (FOR FREE) here. This track is off of the latest album set to drop real soon so be on the looks. Oh and if you need a DJ to get your party bumpin', this is your Guy. Spin the track.

Tribute to the 845: Cans

Everybody loves to see their hometown getting some spotlight. Cans is outta Poughkeepsie, New York...not too far from my upstate domain, Kingston. Reppin' the 845, he is trying to make it in the industry like everyone else. He's got an album on iTunes and a few mixtapes that aren't too bad. Whether you're from the 845 or not, this is a track to bump to. Kudos to Samwell C. with the find. Spin the track.

Lupe the Killa'...

I didn't post this with the rest of the Lupe tracks because it deserves a post of it's own. If you're gonna sleep on the mixtapes, at least grab this track off of Fahrenheit 1/15 Part II: Revenge of the Nerds and give it a listen. To better comprehend the song, check this out Breaking Down Lupe's Style. Personally, its not my favorite Lupe song however it fully justifies my stance.

Lupe Fiasco

When Lupe's sophomore album came along, The Cool, he instantly became one of my favorite artists. I hadn't really listened to his debut album Food & Liquor, but when I did my homework and listened to that first album I found myself pretty perplexed. I loved Food & Liquor even more than I liked The Cool. The two albums were quite different though, especially the underlying message and direction of the music from the first album to the second. In a way, I was convinced Lupe "dumbed it down" for an appeal to a larger audience..."selling out." After much consideration and education from a wise friend, I've finally understood Lupe's direction and the significance of both albums. To save you from reading paragraphs of useless hip-hop rhetoric let me get to the point, Lupe Fiasco is a genius. The complexity of his music, which is masked by its ability to be interpreted simply, is beyond any other artist ever to rap. In terms of flow and lyricism Lupe ranks among the best of all-time and is certainly in the rankings of elite rappers. His two albums alone don't really justify this claim however his mixtape game certainly solidifies him in the upper echelon of urban music. Before The Cool, Lupe came out with a series of mixtapes, Fahrenheit 1/15, which are all amazing. He samples The Gorillaz and gets on a few other popular beats and straight up murders them. I would highly recommend listening to these mixtapes to anyone who is a Lupe fan and to anyone skeptical of my view.  Spin the track.
P.S.- If you still need to be convinced, check out this entry from my boy Doug of Yo!BC Raps.

Hot Out the Oven: LOGGY

Along with Reinvention, Loggy is my latest catch courtesy of Josh M. of Detroit to Boston. Just when you thought you'd heard every white rapper from the 'burbs...let me hit u with some sound. Just as hip-hop is changing, so is the hip-hop artist. Call em soft or whatever but the new stream of artists who are predominantly white and hav no street/urban cred need some play. Loggy is reppin' the West in this genre and has a couple dope songs. Don't sleep on this one. Spin the track.

Chiddy Bang? Not Quite...Hot Out the Oven: Reinvention

I came across this song and a great entry about it and music as a whole on pigeonsandplanes.com. Basically the blogger was agreeing with my earlier notion that hip-hop is undergoing a vast transformation and dudes like Xaphoon Jones and Chiddy from the duo Chiddy Bang are pioneering the way. Coincidentally, Reinvention is a two-man crew who met at Drexel University, just like Chiddy and Xaphoon, and they happen to be doing similar things in the same studio Chiddy Bang met up. Crazy rite? This song samples the indie-electronic band Florence and The Machine and if you're into Chiddy Bang, you're gonna fux with Reinvention. Spin the track.

Murs-Bad Man

This west coast rapper is a silent sensation in the hip-hop world. Murs' poignant lyrics and classic hip-hop sound is distinct and powerful. Murs isn't really well known in the main stream public but I'm sure just about every rapper and producer can vouch that he has some serious mic flow and creativity. This song has a sick sample and Murs kills it. Spin the track.

Hot Out the Oven: K-Young-Sexy B*tch (David Guetta Remix)

David Guetta's "Sexy B*tch" was a club anthem in '09 and the beat will never get old. Its a relief to hear someone do a lil something something with it since I'm sure everybody has heard the original at least 50 times. Not really my cup of tea but its a solid party jam. Spin the track.

Hot Out the Oven: Blue Scholars

The Blue Scholars are out of Seattle, Washington and have been tearing up the underground scene for quite a bit. The duo's music and success is really based on their production. The lyrics and flow are alrite but I won't front, its their beats that make them worth listening to. Their most well known track, and my personal favorite, is "No Rest For The Weary." They have a couple albums and tons of other songs. Blue Scholars has a fairly unique sound and has sampled some new age indie/alternative bands-they hav an Owl City remix [Paul Valery] and an Empire of the Sun [New People] sample as well. I love their beats and production but don't feel the actual rapping as much so I'm too familiar with all their tracks. These two are pretty dope tho. Spin the track.

Hot Out the Oven: The Dean's List

These guys are on the rise, I'm not a big fan but they are growing on me. This is one of their better songs but they've got a solid collection of singles that are all free and on the link. Spin the track.

Throwback Track: Dialated Peoples ft. Kanye West

Sifting through music, especially when its not always good music, can get pretty frustrating and almost depressing. With this current mixtape crazy and everyone running blogs, artists are dishing out music (free music) by the second. New tracks and artists surface just about everyday but the overall quality of the music is on a downward trend. I'd be all about the mixtape craze if the majority of the music being made was substantial and actually worth listening to. Don't get me wrong, a lot of artists' claim to fame is their mixtape game, but too much wack shit comes out these days and if you're not careful...you'll find yourself reducing your standards and listening to some mediocre music. The blog-o-sphere has been pushing me to that level of mediocrity and I've had some trashy posts recently that are fueled by the industry and hype that I'm exposed to when I sift thru music everyday. Thats my fault folks, I'll try and give everything a spin once or twice before throwing it up. Luckily, I have enough "throwback tracks" in the vault to keeping things rolling. "Throwback" not in the traditional sense but anything thats a year or so old. This a Dialated Peoples track from a couple years ago that is a must have. Kanye's cameo certainly helps but regardless, the song is hot. Spin the track.

Kanye in 2010

Kanye's Album Good Ass Job is pretty much up for Album of the Year and it hasn't even hit the peoples. Kanye guest starred on The Cleveland Show and killed it in this little skit. The show is by no means worth watching, I'm just hyped to hear Kanye back to his ways.

Throwback Track: De La Soul-Oooh

[There is another version with a longer intro to the video but its hard to come by]

If you haven't heard of this legendary trio do your homework and get your knowledge up asap. In the 90s De La Soul made countless hits and anthems and their talent was still prominent in the early 2000s when they released this track off of their 5th Album [Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump]. Back in the day, when MtV was more than just Tru Life, 16 and pregnant, and The Jersey Shore...music videos were essential in the promotion and overall perception of a song/artist. De La Soul's "Oooh." is the ultimate music video. Its got a developed theme and story line (a parody of The Wiz and The Wizard of Oz), features comedian Dave Chappelle, and utilizes humor and public interest to leave an impression of the music through both sound and vision. This is one of my favorite tracks of all time and the video might be the best I've ever seen. Enjoy the genius of producer Prince Paul and guest Redman who worked with De La to make a classic. "Get your party on" and... Spin the track.

Hot Out the Oven: Big Sean ft. Drake

Just download it. End of story. Spin the track.

Hot Out the Oven: The Game

Producer Just Blaze killed it with this beat. Word on the street is the beat was intended for Dre's Detox, not sure the credibility of my sources but if so....I guess I can still wait. The Game is stepping back into the lime-light so be on the looks. Spin the track.
